Mad as a Wet Hen

Today I had one of those days when I was mad from the time I woke up, to the time I went to bed. Plenty of reasons why too; I even tried to be thankful and happy but nope. Nothing worked. I will tell y’all a little bit about it, but I am still mad, so don’t expect too much. (I still love y’all, and it ain’t nothing any of y’all did). It’s a Saturday too! Its supposed to be a good day on Saturday.

This morning I woke up, right off I stubbed my big toe on the side of the bed. Ouch! Hobbled on up the hall to brush my teeth and all, but the water handle broke off in my hand before I could even turn it on. Fine. I used HOT water to brush my teeth thank you. Then Mamaw started yelling at me about something I was supposed to do last week, and I really honestly had forgot what it was I was supposed to do.

I went to drink my hot chocolate for breakfast, and it was so hot I burned my tongue. Then Shady started whining that he wanted the cereal that I just got the last of. We almost never eat cereal, so I just gave him my bowl so he would shut up. I got a cold biscuit out of the stove and ate it like that, since for some reason Mamaw didn’t make any hot breakfast today.

Ok, so I went outside to pet my dog and do the chores. My own dog, my very favorite dog nipped me out of the blue. Not hard but he bit me for some odd reason. Again, I tried to stay calm and told myself “Just do the chores Pete, take care of the critters.” The setting hen for some reason had scooted all of her eggs to the side of the nest, and when I went to get them, I dropped the whole bunch and they broke. Dangit! So I called the cats over to eat them. At least somebody got eggs for breakfast.

Finished up the chores and was headed to feed the baby goat, and he was nowhere to be found. I found him alright; he got hung in the fence in the back of the pen trying to escape. He wasn’t hurt, he was just stuck through one of the square holes in the back of his pen and when he saw me, he started hollering. I had to cut the panel, get him out, then fix the panel I cut.

While I cut the panel, I managed somehow to cut myself too. Now I was getting more than a little mad. The mama goat just stood there stupid, wondering why I was even there without feed for her, ignoring her baby goat’s cries. I managed to scoop her some fresh hay, which she promptly started eating – and pooping on. “Dumb, dumb, dumb,” I thought.

When I get mad I generally try to walk it off. Our driveway is kind of long, kind of not so I decided I will just go get the mail for Mamaw. I got to the mailbox, and since it had rained last night I was careful to avoid the big puddle the mailman made with his truck. And here comes a car around the curve, splashing all that muddy water on me. I got so mad I didn’t even get the mail. I was jumping up and down and I even stuck a middle finger at the car that did it (y’all don’t tell Mamaw I did that). I knew that they must have did it on purpose.

I went to the hay barn and just sat down on a bale, trying hard not to cry. Sometimes when a feller gets that mad, he just has to sit down and try to gather it all back up. While I was sitting there, my mama cat and her kittens came marching up, and she was demanding pets. I scooped her up and gave her a pet or two and set her down. Then I scooped up the fattest gray tabby kitten, and he started purring loud while I petted and held him.

At least somebody is having a better day than me, I was thinking. That kitty didn’t have a care in the world. He was full of fresh dropped chicken eggs, and mama’s milk, and he was purring louder than I have ever heard an almost weaned kitten purr ever. I wonder if he gets mad like I do sometimes in his little cat world?
